New Image: Church at Möðruvellir

As promised earlier in the week, the next image on the SmugMug site is the Church at Möðruvellir, or Möðruvellirskirkja.  This is a simple country church located in the northern part of Iceland near Akureyri, the so-called northern capitol of the country.

This is a church that is very much off the beaten-path.  Most people traveling through the area would miss it all together because once leaving Akureyri, which is a very beautiful city, the stars of that particular area are Goðafoss and the Lake Mývatn–both on Road 1, or the Ring Road.  Traveling to this church would require making a quick detour before leaving the eastern edge of Akureyri and traveling up a road past two other churches before getting to this one.

I will speak again about Iceland’s churches and my fascination for them, but for now you will have to settle for this image.
